You’ve probably heard of BYOB, but what is BYOD?
Bring your own device, or “BYOD”, means putting in place an IT infrastructure that allows employees to use whatever device they want – personal laptop, smartphone, iPad or other tablet – to access company systems and data.
BYOD is part of a trend felt across many industries towards more mobile, flexible workplaces. The days of the office cubicle, desk phone and PC are not over by any means, but many companies are moving towards ‘hot-desking’, eschewing landlines in favour of mobile phones and issuing laptops and tablets rather than bulky desktop computers. Some are going even further and letting employees decide which devices they use for work.
What’s the benefit? There is some evidence to suggest that letting employees use their own devices at work can help tboost staff morale and productivity. Tech-savvy employees will often develop their own loyalties and preferences for particular brands or models. Not only might they resent being ‘forced’ to use a less preferred brand, but they are also likely to work more quickly on a laptop or phone that they already use on a daily basis in their personal life. And of course, allowing employees to “bring their own” can reduce capital expenditure for firms!
Naturally, there are some risks involved in handing over control of employees’ hardware choices. Data security is the biggest risk – a lost phone or laptop can leave sensitive company data out in the open, and companies must take steps to ensure that data is taken off devices when employees leave the firm. It can also be a challenge to ensure that a company’s systems remain compatible with employees’ constantly upgrading devices.
However, HW Technology can help you to manage these risks by putting appropriate safeguards in place. We do this by making sure that we thoroughly understand how your business works and designing a system that fits your unique needs.
BYOD won’t be right for every company, but if you are interested in exploring the benefits of giving your employees greater freedom regarding their devices, get in touch with HW Technology today.
