Over 12 years since it arrived Windows XP support has finally ended. But for many organisations still running the operating system the challenges going forward are huge. The PC’s still boot and work but they will be drastically less secure.
It is thought around 1/3 of the worlds PC’s still use Windows XP with an estimated increase in virus infections on Windows XP of 66% after April 8th. So if you have Windows XP what can you do???
From a mid term point of view the only two things you can do is to purchase a new PC with Windows 7 or 8.1 installed or upgrade to the newer operating system. However this isn’t a quick fix for many organisations who may have to spend large amounts to do this.
In the short term you can do a few things to be a little more secure:
1. Run the final updates available for XP.
2. Switch browsers away from IE. Google will be supporting Chrome on XP until 2015.
3. Check you anti virus is up to date at all times.
Th only way to be truly secure is to not go on the Internet at all with Windows XP. This is obviously something that is unworkable for most organisations.
The only real fix for this is to replace the XP devices with supported systems. Not ideal for all but Windows XP is pretty old!
