Windows 10 has a number of useful features that may just make things easier. Here are a few to get you started.
Start menu customisation
Make the Start menu your own. If you like the traditional interface with the Live Tiles, you can right-click on any tile and select Resize to alter the tile’s dimensions.
If you dislike Live Tiles and the Metro interface you can also right-click on every one of the defaults in the Start menu and select Unpin from Start if you want to hide them. You can then replace them with desktop software you work with on a regular basis, the choice is yours.
Quick Access View – File Explorer
When you open File Explorer in Windows 10, it defaults to a new Quick Access view that shows your most frequently accessed folders and recently viewed files. If you would prefer to switch it back to the more standard view – Open File Explorer, select View > Options from the Ribbon. The Folder Options window opens. Click the “Open File Explorer” drop-down menu at top, then select the “This PC” option. Click Ok and this is changed.
Quite a handy feature of the new Maps app is you can now run offline maps. Click Settings (gear icon) in Maps, select download or update maps under “offline maps”. This will then allow you to select which country you want to download the offline map for.
Virtual desktops allow you to segregate your open apps between self-contained desktops. Switching between open virtual desktops is pretty simple using Task View or Windows key + Tab. You can use Alt + Tab to switch between open apps across all desktops.
You can also move an app from one virtual desktop to another which can be useful if you want to run Word and excel on the same desktop. Open the virtual desktop where the application you want to move is located, open the Task View interface, click-and-hold on the app you’d like to move, then drag it to the other virtual desktop at the bottom of the screen.
Godmode is back
Godmode has returned in Windows 10. Once you have turned it on you will have access to the power user menu that brings most of the operating systems settings and config options into one place.
