Most Microsoft Windows users are familiar with Internet Explorer – the internet browser that is installed by default on all computers running Windows. Commonly abbreviated IE, the browser has been installed on computers since 1995 with updated versions being released regularly over the years. Users have been tasked with making sure these updates are applied but many don’t!
Why should I update Internet Explorer?
Although a lot of people use IE, it’s now time to upgrade to the latest version of this browser: Internet Explorer 11. Support for older versions of Internet explorer ended on the 12th January 2016.
Note, if you’re running Windows 10 then you’ll find Microsoft’s newest browser, Edge, is the default program for browsing the internet.
If you are on certain versions of Windows 7 or 8 then you may also be prompted to update to Windows 10 and as part of that process, you’ll also get encouraged to use Edge, although Internet Explorer 11 still remains available in the background. You can’t use Edge on anything other than Windows 10 devices though.
The older versions of Internet Explorer will remain functional but users with older browsers will no longer receive technical support and security updates, leaving older IE versions much more vulnerable to security breaches and hackers, and for this reason, an update is highly recommended.
We are excited with the new Microsoft browser because older versions of Internet Explorer often would not display the website as it was intended or would generate frustrating errors, so it’s good news that IE11 and Microsoft Edge have been created with better support for the web standards meaning users will have a much better experience when visiting your business website.
Edge is a more user-friendly, faster browser, when compared to Internet Explorer, however it lacks one or two business focussed add-ons, so corporate users will need to keep using IE11.
People on older internet explorer versions will occasionally receive a message requiring them to upgrade however it is recommended that you update Internet Explorer as soon as possible to keep your machine safe. You can read more about Edge on the Microsoft website.
Is there an alternative to update Internet Explorer with Edge?
Google Chrome is another browser option if you’re looking for something other than Internet Explorer. It’s a free browser built by the Google team that has, over the past few years, gained a huge market share, becoming the world’s most popular browser.
For security reasons, IE users need to update Internet Explorer often however the process, for an average user, can be time-consuming and frustrating. The process can involve updating the whole Windows operating system and restarting the computer, Google Chrome, on the other hand, automatically updates, ensuring you have the latest, safest copy as well as saving time. Chrome is also faster and very easy to use, explaining why they have gained so much popularity. You can download Google Chrome for free on this link.
