Google and Sony have announced a tie-up releasing a product that allows users to surf the internet, play games and watch videos on their television for the first time outside of the US.
The device, a set-top box will cost in the region of £200 when it hits the market on July 16. It is expected to compete with Apple’s own TV box which is already available in the UK and currently priced at £99.
The Sony box will be controlled by a dual-sided remote control with a full QWERTY keyboard. Google TV can be controlled via a smartphone, just like Apple’s offering.
Google TV will be based around the Android software and allow users to switch between applications like Twitter and Facebook whilst watching live TV. YouTube will be available to the new service and offers a library of films, premium music videos and live broadcasts of events around the world.
The device will be followed with a Blu-ray version expected to cost around £300 when it is launched later in the year.
