According recent studies, 40% of businesses hit by disaster never reopen. And another 25% close within two years. High profile disasters have made “disaster recovery” solutions top of mind for many businesses. However, systems can go down for many reasons, whether it’s a natural disaster, a fire, or power outage.
Recovering from unexpected downtime requires more than data backup. It’s about getting your applications and systems back to where they were before the downtime occurred. This can take days, even weeks with simple backup systems. And without frequent backups, you can lose many days’ worth of data. Without a solution to ensure business continuity, you are at risk for major business disruptions resulting in lost productivity, and lost customers.
Haines Watts Exeter are based in Southernhay in the centre of the city. The office has over 25 staff and has a smaller satellite branch located in the town of Crediton 7 miles away.
The office recently suffered an electrical fire which caused a large amount of damage to the ground floor of the building. Ben de Cruz (Managing Partner) was on site just after the fire had been extinguished. “The ground floor of the office serves as the reception and admin area for the business, unfortunately this is also where our internet connectivity, cabling and telephone systems are located”.
After an initial call with Mark Burgess (Director, HW Technology) late on the evening the fire occurred the staff were notified by text and arrangements made for them to work from the Crediton office or at home until further notice. The business runs all applications and data from a hosted desktop system provided and hosted by HW Technology. This enabled the business to function as normal from any location. All data and applications were available from the outset of the fire and downtime has been minimal for most staff.
Following a meeting between the partners of HW Exeter and Mark Burgess the day after the fire all equipment was replaced and internet connectivity was restored. Subject to the electrical survey being completed successfully and deep clean completed all staff will be able to return to the office within 14 days of the fire.
Ben said “Due to the systems and services provided by HW Technology we have not lost any data at all and in real terms have had few productivity issues”.
