This week has seen internet host provider 123-Reg suffering a major outage on its virtual private server (VPS) platform and has advised customers to restore from backups. The outage has affected thousands of websites with some services still not restored 5 or 6 days later. Would a managed website service helped?
A simple error on a clean-up script inadvertently brought down a number of VPS servers and it seems to have caused chaos for thousands of businesses. Some are working but look like they have been corrupted, others have no service at all and have disappeared from the web. Many are still struggling to get their site back in its entirety.
What can you do to prevent this from happening?
The VPS service is an unmanaged one, in essence no-one looks after the servers hosting the websites. Taking a fully managed service from your web company can help. Our own web services are offered with full management and maintenance as an option. This includes web server updates, security updates and backups. We recommend all businesses take maintenance for their sites.
Why bother with a managed website service?
To reduce the risk of a major outage or issue with your website! If your site is an important aspect of your businesses marketing and sales effort, it needs to be looked after. Updating the systems and software can help reduce the likelihood of it being hacked and exposed to risks on the internet. Backups provide re-assurance that in the event of a catastrophe you can get your web presence back online in a reasonable time-frame.
Isn’t it expensive?
It depends on a business’s requirements. You can have as much support as you want or just the basics, we can analyse your needs and find something that is tailored to suit you.
