Over the last few weeks a lot of press has been given to the growing threat from Ransomware. This is effecting businesses and individuals and doesn’t distinguish between them.
We have recently helped a business who unfortunately became infected with a Ransomware virus. The virus infected the business’s PC after a user mistakenly opened an attachment claiming to be an invoice from a supplier. In a few minutes the machine had become unusable and the business could no longer access any data.
The biggest issue is that the business had its accounts, payroll and back office information on the PC. To make matters worse the business’s previous IT support person had not set up a backup and as such the business had lost its information.
What we did
To get the business back up and running we had to format the PC and on completion, Windows was installed and all applications were re-loaded. We contacted the business’s accountants and fortunately they had backups of the core accounts and payroll data from 3 months prior. We worked with the accountant to import the data and re-run the payroll and accounts data back to the present date and luckily the business is able to function as normal now.
We have also implemented a simple on-line backup solution for the business. This is taking the accounts, payroll and EPOS data offsite so if they ever have a repeat issue the recovery will be much quicker.
What can you do?
Whilst having an up to date anti-virus program will catch most examples of ransomware, the most common method of infection is by user interaction (where a user downloads and runs a file, or runs a file attached to a convincing-looking email).
To combat this it is best practice to be vigilant opening attachments, particularly from senders you don’t recognise, and avoid downloading files from websites you don’t trust.
As simple as it might sound make sure your business has a backup routine in place. Also test the restore from time to time to make sure it is actually working!
