Helpsellstories.com provide services to individuals who may have a story that is newsworthy. The business is run by a journalist, Johanna Bell and she specialises in helping people sell their stories to national newspapers, magazines and on-line news sites.
What we did…
The Helpsellstories.com site was suspended by the hosting provider 123-reg due to it being hacked. As this is the main advertising for the business it was important to get the site back online.
The first phase of the job was to secure a backup of the existing site and analyse what the issues were. After inspecting the site it became clear that it was running an old version of WordPress. The site had been compromised by a known vulnerability and the hacker had added an elevated user account. They had added their own code to the PHP code already on the site and used the web server as a mail server. They then sent spam via the hosted web server.
The first job was to run malware scanners over the site backup to identify any rogue code that remained. Once we were sure that the security hole had been closed we applied all security (theme, plugin and WordPress) updates, and installed our security plugins to lessen the chances of this occurring again
We also removed/renamed the ‘admin’ user as this is most likely the point of attack (common username). The site was then restored and is back up and running.
What they said…
“As the site is my main point of engagement for potential clients, it was important to get the site backup and running in the shortest amount of time possible. HWT provided an easy to understand service and explained exactly what they would be doing. They also made sure the basic security issues on the site were rectified and have put a maintenance plan in place to update on regular basis”
